Henson Airlines Flight 1517: 1985 aviation accident
On September 23, 1985, Henson Airlines Flight 1517, approaching Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, struck the southwest face of Hall Mountain near Grottoes, killing all fourteen people aboard. Investigators blamed a navigational error by the crew, with inadequate airline training among the contributing factors. Among those killed was First Officer Zilda Spadaro-Wolan, the first female commercial airline pilot to die in a U.S. airplane crash.
